It’s June of 2014 and Bria has just finished her freshman year at the University of Central Arkansas with a 4.0 GPA. The aspiring pediatrician’s college journey is off to a great start.
During her sophomore year, Bria learns she is pregnant and will soon welcome a daughter, Hazel. Hazel’s arrival is a blessing but creates a juggling act for her young mother. Bria finds herself bringing a newborn daughter to study groups. And the commute between home and campus coupled with struggling to find time to spend on Hazel’s infant needs proves to be a serious hurdle on Bria’s path to success.
During this time, Hazel’s grandmother encouraged Bria to seek out support to lessen the financial burden she was experiencing. That’s when she found ASPSF. With the help of ASPSF scholarships, Bria was able to make ends meet and continue on her academic journey. “My money always comes at the perfect time.”
Hazel recognizes her mom’s hard work. She is quick to share with others that “her mommy is going to be a doctor!” Bria recently graduated from UCA and is currently preparing for medical school, continuing pursuit of her childhood dream. Bria’s story is just one of ASPSF’s tens of thousands of success stories across the state of Arkansas.
As one group graduates, another begins their educational journey. Through your support of the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund, you can have a direct impact on the lives of these students as they work to transform their future and the future of their children. Each and every dollar received goes directly to scholarships and support services for single-parent students in Arkansas communities.
Recipients like Bria use scholarship funds to pay for the “little” things that could completely derail a parent’s education goals – things like childcare, transportation costs, course materials, basic household expenses and even groceries.
In addition to financial support, ASPSF scholarship recipients are provided with a number of personal and professional development opportunities throughout their time in the program. Thanks to donor support, these opportunities are quickly expanding. Current selections include Job Readiness, Budget Basics, Budget Cooking (complete with crockpot and cookbook!), Car Maintenance, Homebuying 101 and much more.
